Providing staff and students with quality online resourcing; advising the executive team and having a library voice in the teaching and learning team.

What major tasks have you achieved?
Library collaboration across 4 campuses; plus supporting staff through communication about copyright, online literacy readers and online resources.

What has been the result for staff and/or students?
Great teamwork for staff/ library staff feel valued/ students are supported via the structures put in place. Staff were really appreciative of the information surrounding copyright, and were very relieved when the new agreement came out! Staff are also very thankful for the support library has given for Clickview. Many online resources were ones that library has been quietly promoting for a long time, but now the staff are really engaging with these quality resources.

School libraries during covid

The Library Team at a state high school in WA have been called stars by their appreciative parents as they work hard to support the students and staff during COVID-19.

What has been the focus for your school library/role during the COVID-19 Crisis?
Making sure that all our staff and students knew that we would be here for them physically as much as we can and online. For the students who were onsite making sure that they were welcome and we enjoyed spending time with them.

What major tasks have you achieved?
Lots of online trials and being available as much as we can 24/7. This has given us time to promote our online learning platforms. Providing one to one assistance for staff who are not confident with IT

What has been the result for staff and/or students?
More use of our online platforms. One parent's comment was that we were stars providing her daughter with not only books but help to move forward with her learning because she was given ideas but more importantly she felt we cared.

Snapshot of a School Library During COVID-19 #8

School libraries during covid

A Teacher Librarian at a school in WA shared the story about how their school library has responded to COVID-19.

Due to personal circumstances I was able to volunteer to supervise/teach the students of essential services parents that remained at the school. The number was small about 10-14 and the library is large enough to allow for students to spread out. This allowed other staff to focus on getting their online learning up and running.

The major benefits:
Most important: The students were happy, content, extremely well behaved, patient and showed resilience. They were all in a very familiar space that they know as a comforting, relaxing space. And they were thankful. I got to know students on a much deeper level and I was thanked everyday.

Staff were appreciative: It was appreciated. It was valued. And gave staff a break.

Parents: very appreciative, though we didn’t succeed on finishing every task the students went home happy having worked, played, read, and interacted kindly with each other. No arguments between siblings at all!

Our Library assistant was used within classrooms at this time due to the need elsewhere and the need to reduce contact between students and too many others.

The major tasks achieved during this time:

Copyright: keeping staff up to date with copyright issues.

Online learning: creating videos and tasks for students at home and for teachers: navigating library home screen, encyclopaedias, ClickView, Sora/Overdrive

Creating read aloud videos of books that follow our library curriculum i.e., the ones I would use if we were at school to improve students' engagement with literature.

Quarantining books when returned and shelving

Finding resources for teachers/parents: any resources that have been shared I have passed on to staff, though I try not to overwhelm them with too many emails, I try to wait till someone has collated a list and then pass it on.

The Response from students and staff:

School staff have been appreciative. I believe they realise the work load and the need to keep things running smoothly. They have been considerate of what can be achieved by one person.

Students both at home and in school have enjoyed the library lessons being created and the support that could be offered to all.

Final thoughts

It has been a tiring and yet very rewarding time. My focus has been only on the students and their well being. This has then followed through to the staff and parents' wellbeing.

Please note, not everyone would be in the personal situation that I have found myself in being able to supervise students and work long hours to make sure that library lessons are still running smoothly. I firmly believe that this should be voluntary at this time as everybody’s personal situation is so different.

Every other library task has been put on the back burner. No cataloguing, no displays designed for when library reopens, no enhancement of library programmes, no spur of the moment ideas to engage students, no stocktaking. I have gone back to the bare basics of “what do I need the students to know by the time they get back, what books do I need to expose them to to continue with sharing the love of reading. How can I continue to share this love of reading?

Biggest learning curve/learning curve (failure) : hyperlinks don’t copy and paste! If you are trying to be super organised then this is not the best method!!!

School libraries during covid

Sarah Love, Head of Library at Mandurah Catholic College, WA, shares what has been happening in their school library during COVID-19.

What has been the focus for your school library/role during the COVID-19 Crisis?
As a Teacher Librarian - preparing to teach online. As the Library manager - promoting online resources to staff and families, ensuring LibGuides are created to assist research tasks, enabling staff to use ClickView to its fullest potential, setting up contact-less deliveries for library books.

What major tasks have you achieved?
Contact-less deliveries will be available to Primary students from Term 2. All Learning Areas have had additional training in how to use ClickView to create interactive video resources for their classes. Creation of LibGuides has increased.

What has been the result for staff and/or students?
Primary students still have access to physical books. Students can see the video instructions they need without being side tracked by YouTube adverts. Staff are able to instantly direct students to the database or internet resources they require for a task.

What reactions did you get from students/teachers/school leaders/parents to what the library staff were doing?

Teachers are very excited about using ClickView to provide their video lessons and very appreciative of the extra training provided - via video meetings - by the Library Technician. School leaders are very keen to set up the delivery of library books to students - we are even able to use the Principal's car.

The learning curve for all staff, including library staff, has been steep but amazing to watch. As ever the library staff just got on with the learning required and then set about teaching others what they had learned and how this would benefit the students.

School libraries during covid

The Library Team at Cabra Dominican College have been busy supporting staff and students during COVID-19. Here's what they have been up to.

Towards the end of term when we had fewer and fewer students, we remained open. We continued to encourage reading and allowed unlimited borrowing. We suspended all overdue notifications and changed the due back date to late May. Teachers were encourage to use our spaces for their classes as we have large open areas which are perfect for physical distancing. It goes without saying that it felt very strange to see so few students in the library.

The Library Team at the Cabra Dominican College Library Hub

We thanked our students for responding so positively, we had a record number of items being borrowed and it was wonderful to see many of them reading in our “quiet library spaces. Students relished the opportunity for quiet reading time, this is not always possible in our normally very busy Library Hub.

During the next few weeks the librarians will work swiftly to process, cover and catalogue new books for further borrowing. We will prepare parcels that students can collect should they wish to. Our ACCESSIT library portal allows students to browse the catalogue and place items on reserve. They also have access to numerous databases for conducting and continuing their research and satisfying their curiosity. We have been able to add new databases and have taken advantage of the free trials on offer for eBooks and audio books. We want to give students access to the best resources and we want them to know that we are there for them.

School libraries during covid

Janine and her library team at Mater Dei College, Edgewater in WA, have been busy supporting staff and students, while also making some updates to their library collections. She answered our questions to give us some more information about the tasks she and her team have been up to.

What has been the focus for your school library/ role during the COVID-19 crisis?

We have been working from home since 26/03/20.
The whole school is using Microsoft Teams and I have set up a Library Team with the following channels:
Archives
Catalogue Maintenance
Clickview Training
Genre and Reading Lists
Infiniti Support

The first 2 days were a trial of remote learning and then it was extended and we had to make decisions quickly so I opened the Library on 30/3//20 for the morning to enable staff and students to borrow and organised class novels to be left at Student Services for students to collect.

I have also set up a staff book club on Teams.

What major tasks have you achieved?

One of my staff members also works in Archives, so she has been working on that from home.
Another has been cataloguing books from home.
We have just begun genrefying the Library and have been putting books into genres that had not previously been assigned a genre.
Creating reading lists for books that will not have their own genre, e.g. school stories.
Training – Clickview and Infiniti.

What has been the result for staff and/or students?

A good examination of the catalogue and organisation of resources on paper that will make it easy to organise books when we return to the Library.
Promotion of databases and ebooks and audio book collections.
Dissemination of online learning resources.

What other information would you like readers to know?

If remote learning is to continue we would look at solutions for the community to borrow resources form the Library.

If you would like to let us know what your school library is doing during COVID-19, you can share your story here.

School libraries during covid

Rhonda Bruce, Teacher Librarian at St Johns College, Dubbo in NSW answered our questions about what their school library team have been doing during the COVID-19 outbreak to ensure their staff and students have access to the resources they need.

What has been the focus for your school library/ role during the COVID-19 crisis?
I have focused on ensuring that both Students and Staff have clear and precise information on how to access all the e-resources available in our School Library. I also shared information regarding free resources, including weblinks to J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books and David Walliams’ Audio books. Our Library Team also created Visual Guides to Book Titles, which we sent out as a one-page document, to entice readers. I decided to keep the Library open, meticulously cleaning surfaces, keyboards and other spaces used by both staff and students. As the number of students physically on the premises declined, the remaining students were given a study carrell in the Library and that became ‘their’ desk for the day. I very strongly encouraged both students and staff to borrow as many books and other resources as they wanted and advised that there would be no Overdue notices sent out at all. As only our Senior Students have their own devices, my Library Assistant and myself barcoded individual Chromebooks and power supplies, to lend out to students in the Junior school, if they did not have access to devices at home. Two of the smaller rooms in the Library have been set up for staff to use in Remote Learning with Document Cameras.

What major tasks have you achieved?
I created Library – How to Guide which was a number of guides to e-resources in the Library, including How to borrow e-books ; How to use the databases to which the Library subscribes ; How to use Clickview ; and other resources which were currently on offer for free from authors. All this was created on a one-page colourful word document, and this document was turned into link which was sent out to both staff and students.
What has been the result for staff and/or students?
Quite a number of both Staff and Students borrowed from the Library and are utilizing the e-resources. Borrowers who were ‘desperate’ for more to read contacted the Library and we were able to supply them with more reading material.

What other information would you like readers to know?
My talented Library Assistant, wrote, filmed and directed a short videoclip based on the lyrics and song of When she loved me from Toy Story, alluding to borrowers not to forget the Library.

I'd like to introduce you to our next teacher librarian. She answered our questions about her job working in a school library.

What is your role in the school library?

I support teachers and students with literacy education, I manage teacher resources, the purchasing and up dating of books both in print and on KOBO, I manage IT chromebooks and ipads, I teach STEAM, a love of books and literacy, research skills and online cyber safety units.

What do you love best about your job?

The students and the books, bringing them together is always a joy.

What age students do you work with?

I work from Preschool to Year 6

What three words that best describe you?

Flexible, Open-minded, aware

What would you do if you had more time?

Plan richer lessons that challenge students. Work collaboratively with the teachers across the school, embedded better team teaching.

What do you spend most of your time doing?

Tidying the library, followed by cataloguing and getting resources onto shelves, plus shopping for the best buys with a small budget.

What tasks are the next biggest spenders of your time?

Research and resourcing material to support teachers both online and in print, managing across sector meetings as I teach across the school.

What do you fill in the rest of the time with?

Writing curriculum material, upgrading and fixing IT problems

What are some things that you only do occasionally?

Run stocktakes, weed the teachers resource room and covering books

What is the coolest project you have worked on or the coolest thing about your work/day?

For 3 years I ran the suitability team and education strand across the school from the library and I got to take students to participate in the Parliament of Youth on Sustainability in the ACT. The whole project, the writing, researching and presenting was very rewarding for the students and allowed them to engage in real rich research and presentation work.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you in your role?

Being able to have a connection with all the students at a school across the year groups and then building on that over the years.

What made you want to be a Teacher Librarian?

I was a reluctant reader but once I could I feel in love with books and the freedom they gave your mind and soul plus working with students. I was a teacher 1st.

What is one thing you would really like someone to know about your job?

It is harder that you expect and requires a lot of flexibility to be successful.

Snapshot of a School Library During COVID-19 #2

School libraries during covid

Natasha Georgiou, Teacher Librarian at Sevenoaks Senior College, WA, answered our questions about what their school library team have been doing during the COVID-19 outbreak.

What has been the focus for your school library/ role during the COVID-19 crisis?
Providing resources and online support for our teaching staff. Next term this will extend to our student body.

What major tasks have you achieved?
Created a virtual library support page on the school's learning management platform, Connect. This focuses on providing online resources, information literacy strategies and cybersafety tips. Our Library Officer has also used the time without student interruption to organise our storeroom, cupboards and clean and tidy up the shelves (they hadn't been cleaned in many years - yuck!) Next term we hope to be able to arrange weekly student pick-ups of requested books.

What has been the result for staff and/or students?
So far we have teaching staff who have appreciated the support as this is a very daunting time of change for them and to help them to move to online pedagogical delivery is a challenge and takes time. The results are rewarding when you have reluctant users on online technology become comfortable in using these tools.
