Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) will be hosting a special chapel service to commemorate veterans who have served our country on November 10. Local veterans are invited to join the SAGU community for this special event as distinguished guests.
鈥淚t is important that every generation of Americans recognize and appreciate those who served in the armed forces to protect our fundamental freedoms,鈥 says Kermit Bridges, President of SAGU. 鈥淢any of these heroes served at great personal sacrifice with some paying the ultimate price.鈥
Dave Roever , decorated Vietnam Veteran, will be the event鈥檚 guest speaker. Roever served in the Navy as a river boat gunner in the elite Brown Water Black Beret . Eight months into his tour of duty, a phosphorous grenade exploded in Roever鈥檚 hand resulting in life-threatening injuries. Roever was hospitalized for 14 months and underwent numerous major surgeries. Today, Roever draws upon his own war experiences and unique survival story to share a message of courage and commitment.
鈥淲e could have no finer guest speaker for such a special occasion than Dave Roever,鈥 President Bridges said. 鈥淒ave will captivate the heart of every veteran in attendance, as well as every student with his incredible testimony of courage, determination, and ultimate victory despite suffering unimaginable injuries in combat. Dave has been able to speak to hundreds of thousands in his lifetime and the military has provided him special access to minister to enlisted personnel including his incredible efforts working with wounded warriors.鈥
The Wounded Warrior Project is a military and veterans charity service organization empowering injured veterans and their families. Roever and his wife, Brenda, provide training to wounded warriors in public speaking and in marital and emotional recovery after devastating injuries at Eagles Summit Ranch near Westcliffe, Colorado.
Roever will also join local veterans during a complimentary lunch provided for veterans following the service. Ellsworth Huling IV from Ellis County Veteran Services will be present to provide counsel, service and advice to veterans.
鈥淲e believe students will be inspired as they see these veterans and hear their stories, and we hope our veterans will feel encouraged and blessed as our campus family honors them for their service to our nation,鈥 says Bridges.
SAGU鈥檚 Band led by Dr. Tyrone Block, will be playing a number of American Patriotic songs during the service and the Texas National Guard Armory will be invited to join as color guard.
