Off of the field, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (
SAGU) Football team has taken control of their own narrative. Ryan Smith, Head Football Coach, has prioritized creating聽a safe environment where his players can thrive. Due to the unique challenges our community and the world is facing with the COVID-19 pandemic, the聽Lions聽formed an initiative/prayer schedule during the semester. On Fridays,聽the Lions prayed in what they call 鈥淐ords of Three鈥, where they pray in groups of three based on Ecclesiastes 4:12.
鈥淭hough one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” – Ecclesiastes 4:12
With guidance from leaders like Jaylan Moss, the team decided that in alignment with who they are as聽a program they would stand in #CordsOf3 during the national anthem. Also, this fall, the Football program brought in three speakers to discuss social injustice issues. Drew Castillo, Robert E. Purvey and Rev JE Haynes Jr. all stopped by to give our players some knowledge and motivation. In this time, the program is looking to seize the moment and take control of their own narrative. Their goal聽is to stand in unity of social injustice and give a visual representation of a united stance!
