The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lion’s track teams in ´¡²ú¾±±ô±ð²Ô±ð,Ìý°Õ³Ý, on Saturday, February 23rd, for the Hardin-Simmons Early Season Invitation . This meet will officially start the program’s sixth season of competition in outdoor track. Head coach ´³²¹²õ´Ç²ÔÌý°ä´Ç±¹²¹°ù°ù³Ü²ú¾±²¹²õ has been looking forward to this weekend all school year, “This year’s track team will be the largest in terms of numbers in program history! Last year, we competed with five runners and had a tremendous season, as the men finished 13th at the NCCAA National Championships and the women had the program’s first national qualifying sprinter!” The Lions and Lady Lions will be sending eleven runners to Abilene.
Covarrubias mentioned a few members to keep an eye out on, ” Zackary Hammond (Fr.) has the potential to become an All-American in the 10K, 3000m Steeplechase, and the 5k this season. ´¡»å°ù¾±²¹²ÔÌý°ä±ð»å¾±±ô±ô´ÇÌý(³§°ù.) , who also competes in those three events is in contention to do the same. Cody Walker (Jr.) , plans to improve his 2018 NCCAA All-American status in the 3000SC to national champion. I encourage everyone to keep an eye out on Arturo Valdez (Fr.) in the 800m, 1500m and the 3000SC, he can be the team’s wild-card!”
On the women’s side, Covarrubias highlighted a couple of potential standout runners as well, ” Alexandria Castillo (Fr.) and are going to play a huge role in this season’s success. Castillo, an 800m and 1500m runner will also take a crack at the steeplechase, and Pope, a former high school sprinter, will make the transition to the 400m, 800m and 1500m this season. I cannot wait to see all of the ladies compete. Through all of my years of coaching, I have seen so many runners become turn into racers on the track.”
