March 4, 2019 |Ā Blake Cochran

The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions Track teamsĀ madeĀ theĀ trekĀ down to San Antonio thisĀ weekendĀ toĀ competeĀ in the Trinity Open for theirĀ secondĀ meetĀ of the outdoor season.Ā TheĀ fieldĀ wasĀ the most competitive in theĀ historyĀ of theĀ meet, and the Lions stepped up to theĀ challenge.
On theĀ women’sĀ side , Caitlin Cruz,Ā (LaPorte, TX) ,Ā tookĀ herĀ secondĀ crack at the steeplechase shaving off over aĀ minuteĀ and a half from the windy Hardin-Simmons University meetĀ with theĀ timeĀ ofĀ 14:05.3 which is a new SAGU record.Ā SheĀ alsoĀ competed in theĀ 5KĀ later in theĀ dayĀ andĀ setĀ a personal best with theĀ timeĀ ofĀ 22:12.9. “”²ā±ō²¹Ģż±Ź“Ē±č±šĢż(¹ó°ł.) also attempted two newĀ events in the 1500mĀ and 800m.Ā PopeĀ finished the 1500m in 16th place with theĀ timeĀ of 5:41 and 15th in the 800m with a 2:44. HeadĀ Coach JasonĀ Covarrubias onĀ ladiesĀ performances, “I am extremelyĀ proudĀ of how hard theseĀ ladiesĀ competed this weekend.Ā CaitlinĀ isĀ attemptingĀ one of the mostĀ difficultĀ events inĀ trackĀ (steeplechase)Ā and she isĀ improvingĀ by theĀ day.Ā IĀ thinkĀ we haveĀ foundĀ herĀ event!Ā Ayla’sĀ work ethicĀ hasĀ allowedĀ us toĀ stretchĀ her from a high school sprinter andĀ moveĀ her into mid-distance races.Ā ItĀ is alwaysĀ toughĀ toĀ learnĀ duringĀ competitions, but sheĀ isĀ a grinder and her potential showed today.”
TheĀ menĀ hadĀ aĀ solidĀ showing across theĀ boardĀ andĀ wereĀ ledĀ byĀ freshman Zackary Hammond whoĀ setĀ two school records and qualified in both events for the NCCAAĀ National Championships inĀ earlyĀ May.Ā HammondĀ tookĀ theĀ 3000SCĀ (Steeplechase)Ā title with theĀ timeĀ ofĀ 9:51.47, andĀ finishedĀ atĀ the runner-up spot in theĀ 5KĀ with theĀ timeĀ ofĀ 15:20.63.

* °ä“Ē»å²āĢż°Ā²¹±ō°ģ±š°ł startedĀ offĀ where heĀ leftĀ lastĀ seasonĀ offĀ in the 1500m and 800m.Ā WalkerĀ whoĀ tookĀ 7th placeĀ justĀ missing theĀ NCCAAĀ National Championship Standard in the 1500mĀ (4:08.69)Ā with theĀ timeĀ ofĀ 4:08.69.Ā HeĀ later doubled in the 800m, placing 6th with theĀ timeĀ ofĀ 2:01.57.
* ¶Ł²¹±¹¾±»åĢżµž³Ü°ł³¦¾±²¹²µ²¹ shavedĀ nearly 40Ā secondsĀ off of hisĀ timeĀ from lastĀ weekĀ in the steeplechase with theĀ timeĀ ofĀ 11:50.78.
*Senior “”»å°ł¾±²¹²ŌĢż°ä±š»å¾±±ō±ō“Ē ranĀ aĀ 10:31.09Ā andĀ tookĀ 5th place in the steeplechase.
* “”°ł³Ł³Ü°ł“ĒĢż³Õ²¹±ō»å±š³ś (Fr.)Ā won hisĀ heatĀ in the 800m and finished 9th overall with theĀ timeĀ ofĀ 2:03.16.

CoachĀ Covarrubias’ thoughtsĀ on theĀ weekend, “The menĀ impressedĀ me, theĀ timesĀ that they all postedĀ wereĀ remarkable considering how early weĀ areĀ in theĀ seasonĀ but most importantly in our training progression.Ā IfĀ they areĀ hittingĀ theseĀ timesĀ now, we areĀ inĀ for one of theĀ bestĀ seasons in program history!Ā ZackĀ lookedĀ smooth today, CodyĀ lookedĀ strong, Adrian is comingĀ too, Art and DavidĀ areĀ on the brink of aĀ breakthrough.Ā TheseĀ areĀ excitingĀ times andĀ areĀ theĀ kindĀ ofĀ resultsĀ weĀ expectĀ toĀ seeĀ fromĀ hardĀ work.”

TheĀ menĀ willĀ travelĀ for aĀ 4x800mĀ Relay to the Jet Relays in Fort Worth on Saturday, March 9th.Ā BothĀ fullĀ teams willĀ competeĀ on Saturday, March 22nd at Emporia State UniversityĀ inĀ Kansas .
