Student Internships

Business students must complete a 120 hour internship in their major field of study. Internship hours can be obtained in a few weeks or over the course of a semester, depending on student and employer needs. Students must have completed a minimum of 12 hours of Business courses (BSM 4141 will require a prerequisite of 12 hours of business core curriculum courses, BSM 4151 will require 12 hours of BSM major studies as a prerequisite) in order to enroll, but are encouraged to complete the internship during one of the final two semesters of their education. The internship experience is designed to be summative, and therefore it is critical that it be completed late in the course rotation.

Why is an internship important?

  • The internship requirement acts as an essential link between the theoretical principles learned in class and the practical demands of the competitive world of business.
    • Although academic books teach us about what we should know and why we need to know it—whether it is accounting processes or organization behavior—the internship teaches us how it is done.
    • In getting involved in the world of professionals, students go beyond mere book learning and start using the various strategic models to solve practical issues.
  • This 120-hour experience also nurtures “soft skills,” which frequently make or break graduates’ chances of employment upon graduation.
    • In a corporate environment, students will have to learn how to conduct themselves when it comes to company communications, cooperation between departments, and conflict management.
    • Through this experience, students will be able to build a sense of executive presence that sets our graduates apart.
    • Additionally, through internships, students will be forced to improve their time management skills and adaptability as they manage various tasks and strict deadlines.
  • Besides developing skills, the internship serves as an important networking tool.
    • The student will interact directly with professionals within the industry and get valuable advice about his or her career path.
    • This interaction may result in a letter of recommendation, which is extremely useful when searching for job positions.
    • In most cases, an internship works as a long interview, and the student receives a full-time job offer from the company because he or she fits perfectly into the culture.
  • The internship program ensures that the student will gain clarity on how to define his or her career path.
    • Through firsthand exposure to the world of work and through actual experience within the field whether it is finance, marketing, or management, students can determine whether they indeed have what it takes to be successful.
    • Professional conviction will enable the student to become a master of the trade and eventually lead with integrity and a biblical worldview.
