SAGU Theatre to Perform “A Christmas Carol”

Waxahachie, TX

November 9, 2018 | Mikayla Heldt

Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Theatre is performing Charles Dickens鈥 鈥 A Christmas Carol 鈥 later this year in the Hagee Center Performance Hall.

The play will show Friday, November 30th and Saturday, December 1st at 7:30 P.M. There will also be a 3 P.M. showing on Sunday, December 2nd. Tickets are $10, but students, faculty, and staff will get free admission by presenting their SAGU ID.

鈥淲e did this play last year, and it was such a success that we decided to do it again with the possibility of making it a SAGU Christmas tradition,鈥 says director Ronnie Blount.

Though 鈥淎 Christmas Carol鈥 was originally a novel by Dickens, it led to many adaptions for both theatre and film. It鈥檚 an age-old redemption story of conceited, insensitive miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner and three spirits of Christmas on Christmas Eve.

鈥淭his is one of my favorite stories and definitely my favorite Christmas story,鈥 Blount says.

Charles Dickens, who not only authored 鈥淎 Christmas Carol鈥, but other novels as well, was a Christian man who used his faith and values to communicate the rich themes in his works.

鈥淭he message of the gospel pervades 鈥楢 Christmas Carol鈥 from the entrance of Scrooge’s nephew in the first scene to the salvation of Scrooge at the end,鈥 Blount says.

Blount hopes that SAGU Theatre鈥檚 production of this iconic tale will reflect and communicate those values.

When asked what he was most excited about putting on this play, Blount says that he loves everything about it, including the Christmas season and Scrooge鈥檚 redemption.

鈥淲hen you couple that with the talented, committed and caring group of young actors with whom I have the pleasure of working on this project, I guess I have to say that I’m excited about all of it.鈥

The actors seem to be just as excited about working on this play.

鈥淪o far my favorite part is seeing everyone take their role and make it their own鈥veryone has an idea on how to do it and Professor Blount is really great because he lets us play around and make it our own,鈥 theatre student Stephanie Van Wyk says.

Van Wyk says that she and the rest of the crew aren鈥檛 starting from scratch this year, which will help add depth to the production and make this year鈥檚 show one to remember.

鈥淚鈥檓 excited to see how this show turns out鈥ast year was fantastic but I think this year will be even better.鈥
